(Rapaport…November 18, 1999) Global Witness, the London based Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) that is documenting and creating international awareness on the war horrors in Angola, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, welcomes the International Diamond Manufacturers Association’s (IDMA) policy initiative of “zero tolerance” regarding any violation of the Angola sanctions (RapNet for November 10). According to Global Witness, consumer confidence in the diamond industry is boosted by this show of solidarity.

The NGO also approved of IDMA’s thinly veiled threat to all sections of the diamond industry to take immediate responsibility and comply with the United Nations’ embargo. Global Witness is hoping that other industry organizations, namely the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB), will break their silence and take an active stand against what has become known as “conflict diamonds.”
