(Rapaport…August 2, 2001) U.S. Representatives Charles Rangel (D-New York)and Amo Hougton (R-New York) introduced a companion bill today to the Senate’s Clean Diamonds Act (S. 1084), along with co-sponsors Tony Hall (D-Ohio) and Frank Wolf (R-Virginia).
According to Debra DeYoung, senior aide to Rep. Hall, the language of the bill is virtually identical to S. 1084. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), said DeYoung, “have signed off on the bill. They’re sold on it.”
The Senate bill was introduced in June by U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-Illinois), Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) and Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin). The bill was a collaborative effort between Rep. Hall, the World Diamond Council (WDC) and NGOs.
