(Rapaport…October 15, 2001) Sierra Leone’s Justice Minister and Attorney-General Solomon Berewa told Voice of America that the meeting between the government, the UN and the RUF held last week effectively ironed out all remaining sticking points in the disarmament process in the country.
“This really has pushed the process very much more to the end,” Berewa said. “Let me call it a wrap-up meeting. I would hope it’s going to be that. There was no issue left which we did not deal with, and exhaustively.”
RUF spokesman Gibril Massaquoi agreed, saying the rebel group’s grievances that led to a postponement in the disarmament process last month were ironed out at the meeting.
Disarmament resumed on October 13.
