(Rapaport…May 7, 2002) The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously on May 6 to extend sanctions against Liberia for one year, citing the government’s alleged support of rebel groups in Sierra Leone and elsewhere. The sanctions include an arms embargo, a ban on the import of Liberian diamonds and a travel ban on the country’s senior government and armed forces officials. The decision also called for a panel of experts to review Liberian compliance with the sanctions by October 7.
